4 Ways To Decorate With Color

I love color. Bringing color into our homes is how we set the stage for happiness. It can be intimidating, because we don’t want to commit to items that are visually ‘too much’ or items that we’ll get tired of in a short time. But you know what? Life’s too short to live in a beige box!

Here are a few tips on how to easily incorporate color into your home, without scaring yourself to death.

PICK YOUR FAVORITE COLOR

Does blue remind you of the ocean and make you smile? Ok, blue it is. If you’re not comfortable opening up the full Crayola box, pick the one color that you’re comfortable with and use it consistently in multiple rooms. It will bring you comfort, while also creating a consistent theme throughout your home.

BUY ART THAT WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME

It’s human nature to feel an emotional reaction to art. Why not also use it as a way to incorporate color into your home? Whether it’s with paintings, photography or mixed media, let yourself follow your instincts when you’re shopping for art. Maybe you normally hate yellow, but for some crazy reason you fall in love with a photograph of a woman in a neon yellow dress. Go for it! It will liven up your neutral walls, and it will never go out of style as long as it speaks to you.

PICK COLORFUL ITEMS STRATEGICALLY

If you’re trying to incorporate more color, there’s no need to run out and paint your dining room red. Start small. Think pillows, throws, accessories and art. Or, select the smallest piece of upholstered furniture in a room and upholster it in a bold color. That way, if you wake up one day and decide you’re tired of the color, it’s not very painful to replace it!

BUY FRESH FLOWERS

Even if every single thing in your home is neutral, you can still bring in fresh color. When you visit the grocery store each week, pick up a few inexpensive bunches of fresh flowers. Distribute them throughout your home and watch the rooms come alive!
